‘That’s Cricket’ was released at the Sydney State Theatre in 1931. It was Cinesound’s second short. Like ‘That She Blows!’ which preceded it, it was yet another film for which the claim has been made that it was Australia’s first talkie. All these claims are backed by some advances in technique, or by some interpretation of the description ‘sound film’ or ‘talkie’, or by the date being variously calculated from when production started, or finished, or when the film was previewed, or released. It can tentatively be said that the first Australian sound shorts were released in 1929 and the first feature in 1930. The titles of ‘That’s Cricket’ are as nostalgic as the sight of its young Test heroes. ‘That’s Cricket. Demonstrated by Australia’s World famous exponents of the Game. A Union Theatre Featurette. Recorded on Union Theatres Cinesound Plant at Cinesound City, Bondi, N.S.W. Announcer Lionel Lunn. Australian Made for Australian Trade.’ And then we are into a kids’ back-street cricket game, with the boy who is firmly saying, ‘I wasn’t out and I ain’t going out. I’ll take my bat away!’ evoking a whole era of healthy lovable childhood. Then Woodfull, the Australia captain, comes on to demonstrate cricket, with the help of ‘the talking screen with its amazing power to lucidly explain and demonstrate most things.’
